GENO Latam Group Description

The Latin American Neurotology Study Group (GENO Latam) is a group of professionals dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with balance problems, both peripheral and central.

GENO Latam, as a non-profit group, is made up of professional speech therapists, medical technologists, audiologists, occupational therapists, neurologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, ENT doctors and otoneurologists. It is made up of more than 900 professionals from all over Latin America, ranging from the northern border of Mexico to Patagonia, Argentina.

By and large, it is a group of professionals who, through solidarity and mutual help, seek to help patients with vestibular pathologies. This comprises two objectives:

1.- Continuous training of professionals who are dedicated to the management of patients with vestibular pathologies, through study groups and talks, so that they can help their patients. This implies that as each professional acquires more knowledge, they will be able to help other professionals grow for the same purpose. Learning to teach is one of the indispensable prerogatives that characterizes each of the members of the GENO Latam group.

2.- To promote unity among professionals linked to this area of knowledge, in such a way that spaces for union can be generated despite cultural differences, languages, professions and nationalities. GENO Latam, is a space that advocates unity as a privileged tool for the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

history of the geno latam group

The cofounders attended a Neurotology course in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2017. At the end, the need for a study group in Neurotology was raised to create a continuous education format. From this idea it emerged that María del Pilar Forero, Juan Hernández, both specialized audiologists in Vestibular Rehabilitation from Medellin, Colombia, and José Pinto Urzúa, ENT and Neurotologist from Chile, held study meetings using a video conference platform. Friends of them were invited and soon after they formed two groups 8 people each. They were called Geno and Geno 2 group because the name of this initiative had already been coined as Geno because it was a study group in Neurotology.

This study proposal was pleasantly received and little by little it aroused the interest of many Latin American professionals to participate in the GENO group, which at this point had already been added the word Latam, since all its members were Latin American.

All this favored an open space, to acquire and share knowledge. In addition, the necessary bonds of friendship and brotherhood were favored among all its members. These aspects were developed in a context where there was a permanent cultural, language and professional challenge. In each exchange, each member was related to a professional of a different nationality who worked in a different area within Neurotology. All these obstacles, with the help of all, were transformed into points of union and growth since interests for a common good prevailed.

After about 6 months after the start of the first video conferences, there was a reflection on the real meaning of the group itself, since the group was growing steadily, which implied a permanent effort. At that moment, the potential significance that the group would have was seen by involving more and more members. It was then necessary to look at the roots and there we saw many common elements of the first members who were related to a spirit of solidarity and altruism. In all the first members there was a Catholic religious formation and a deep-rooted vocation of service to others. Each of these pioneering members felt and lived being instruments of God's love for others in the field that directly touched them, that is, Neurotology.

This made it possible to understand the great effort involved in organizing groups, meetings, and endless administrative tasks. It was collectively assumed that only these elements could justify all efforts to disseminate knowledge and work for unity among professionals.

In relation to the previous point, it is very important to emphasize that the Geno Latam group is not a religious group nor does it advocate any type of philosophy. The foregoing is to recognize our history and the spiritual background of the first members, as there are thousands of groups and institutions around the world. From now on, Geno Latam is a group that has evolved and is currently composed of believers or non-believers. This is not a relevant issue in order to admit a member or consider him for a position within the organization. Our policy is transversal to everything that good means within humanity. In other words, "Do good to the other, the same thing that you would like to do to one". At Geno Latam, we therefore have spaces for all those passionate about Neurotology. This is the only requirement if it can be called like this. We are open to learn, teach and share with all professional people in the goodwill area.

Nowadays, the group has grown significantly taking advantage of the time available during the Covid 19 Pandemic. Its structure has evolved and adapted to the different realities of professionals in the different countries that comprise it. There are groups by countries, by common interests, areas of support and development of ideas that will allow the future to help Latin American and world patients with three simple words: learn, teach and unity.
